Paylocity: our review and rating
A platform many employers know first for payroll strength. Here is our subjective read of where it fits and where it asks more of a team.

Overview
As of our last review, Paylocity is generally described as a broad HR and payroll platform with particular depth in payroll processing and benefits administration. In our view its strengths sit in the administrative core that a large employer depends on: running payroll accurately, managing benefits, and keeping compliance on track. Employers with complex pay structures often value that depth.
Where it tends to shine
- Payroll processing that is widely regarded as robust.
- Benefits administration and the related employee record-keeping.
- A broad module set covering many administrative needs in one place.
- Scales reasonably for larger, multi-site employers.
Where teams tell us it strains
Our impression is that the breadth can come with a steeper learning curve, and some administrators describe the interface as busier and less immediately intuitive than lighter tools. In our view the employee-facing experience is functional rather than delightful for some organisations. As always, this reflects where the product puts its weight, and plenty of employers are happy to trade a little polish for payroll depth.
Who it tends to suit
We see Paylocity fitting employers whose primary pain is payroll and benefits administration complexity, and who have the administrative capacity to learn a broader platform. It is often a sensible entry for organisations that expect to grow and want administrative depth from the start, while employers focused mainly on a light employee experience may find heavier tools a better consideration.
How we rate it
We gave Paylocity an overall 4.0 out of 5, weighting payroll strength and scalability fairly highly for this profile. Its softer sub-scores in our weighting are ease of use and the employee-facing experience. Re-weight the criteria for your own priorities using our scoring method before you treat any single number as decisive.
Our bottom line
Where payroll and benefits administration are the hard part of your operation, in our view Paylocity is worth a close evaluation, provided your team has the appetite to learn a broader tool. Confirm the specifics of your pay complexity with the vendor rather than relying on our summary.
